API QUTE - Qualification of Ultrasonic Testing Examiners (Detection) is a certification developed and offered by the American Petroleum Institute through their Individual Certification Program to help define the minimum criteria for assessing the performance of ultrasonic testing (UT) technicians. To qualify, applicants must possess a current or previous certification in ASNT UT Level II, Level III, or equivalent.
Fitness-for-Service (FFS) assessments and Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) calculations rely heavily on high quality and accurate UT data. Therefore it is important for companies to have confidence in the technicians they employ to collect this data. API's QUTE certification helps inspection companies and owner-users verify that their technicians are qualified to perform UT.
The QUTE certification exam covers the detection and characterization of defects associated with welds in carbon steel or low alloy materials. In particular, defect population may include porosity, lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, center line cracking, root cracks, side wall crack, toe crack, slag, or placebos. These exams are administered differently than other ICP certifications because they utilize the hands-on, performance demonstration testing method.
API QUTE certifications are valid for 3 years, at which point recertification is required.
